Triops: The Living Fossil

A species that has barely changed in 220 million years, and still thrives in temporary pools around the world.

Body Structure

Triops are small freshwater crustaceans, typically 2–10 cm long, belonging to the branchiopod class. Their most distinctive feature is a broad, shield-like dorsal carapace (shell) that covers the head and thorax. Beneath this carapace, they carry up to 70 pairs of leaf-like swimming legs (phyllopods) that serve both for locomotion and filter-feeding.

They possess three eyes: two prominent compound eyes positioned on top of the head, and a single, smaller naupliar eye (simple ocellus) located between them. This arrangement is the origin of their name, tri (three) + ops (eye).

At the rear, the body narrows into a long, forked telson (tail) with two slender caudal rami (forks). Males have a modified seventh pair of legs that function as claspers during mating.

Life Cycle

Triops eggs are deposited in the mud at the bottom of temporary pools. When the pool dries, the eggs enter a state of diapause, a suspended development that can last years or even decades. Once the pool refills with rainwater, the eggs hatch within 24–72 hours.

From hatching to adulthood takes roughly 14–20 days, depending on temperature and food availability. Adults live 40–90 days and can lay thousands of eggs before dying. The eggs are the species' true survival mechanism, not the adults.

This cycle of boom-and-bust is key to their longevity as a lineage: the species doesn't need to survive every drought, only its eggs do.

Diet & Behavior

Triops are omnivorous and opportunistic. They dig through sediment with their many legs, consuming algae, detritus, bacteria, mosquito larvae, and even smaller crustaceans. In temporary pools, they play an important ecological role as primary consumers and sediment disturbers.

They are surprisingly active swimmers and can move through the water column with their phyllopod legs in a rhythmic, metachronal wave, a mesmerizing motion visible even in small hobbyist tanks.

Notable Species

Triops cancriformis, The most widely studied and distributed species, found across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Often called the "shield shrimp" or "tadpole shrimp." This species is the one most commonly kept as a pet and sold in educational kits.

Triops longicaudatus, Common in the Americas, this species is slightly larger and is frequently sold in North American triops kits. It thrives in warm, temporary desert pools.

Triops australiensis, Endemic to Australia, adapted to the extreme boom-and-bust cycles of Australian inland waterways.

The genus contains approximately 20–30 recognized species, though taxonomy is debated. Some researchers consider many of these to be regional variants of a single, highly variable species.

Fossil Record

The fossil record of the Notostraca (order-level) extends back to the Late Permian, roughly 250 million years ago. However, the genus Triops itself appears in the fossil record from the Late Triassic, approximately 220 million years ago.

What makes the Triops fossil record so remarkable is the lack of morphological change. Specimens from the Triassic period are virtually indistinguishable from living species, same carapace shape, same three-eye arrangement, same forked telson. This phenomenon, called morphological stasis, makes Triops a textbook example of evolutionary conservatism.

The survival strategy, drought-resistant eggs with extreme longevity, is likely the key. While adult Triops have a lifespan of only weeks, their eggs can remain viable in dry soil for 20+ years, waiting for the next rain.

Keeping Triops as Pets

Triops are popular educational pets, especially for children learning about biology and natural history. Here's everything you need to know to raise your own living fossils.

1. Get a Kit (or Collect Your Own Eggs)

Triops kits are widely available online and in science shops. They include eggs, substrate, and instructions. Alternatively, you can collect eggs from dry pond sediment in certain regions.

2. Set Up the Tank

Use a small, clean container (1–5 liters). Fill with dechlorinated water or distilled water. Add a thin layer of fine sand or clay substrate (about 1–2 cm). Keep the water temperature between 20–25°C.

3. Add the Eggs

Sprinkle the eggs onto the wet substrate. They will hatch within 24–72 hours. Keep the container in indirect sunlight or under a desk lamp. No aquarium heater needed at room temperature.

4. Feed Them

Feed a tiny pinch of fish flakes or powdered spirulina every 2–3 days. Triops are also good at finding their own food in the substrate (detritus, micro-organisms). Avoid overfeeding, it clouds the water.

5. Watch Them Grow

Triops grow quickly, you'll see them developing from tiny larvae to recognizable adults within 2–3 weeks. They molt their exoskeletons regularly as they grow. Don't remove the shed skins; they recycle nutrients.

6. Collect Eggs Before They Die

If you want to raise another generation, let the tank dry out naturally after the adults die. Collect the dried substrate, it contains thousands of eggs that can be stored for years and hatched again by adding water.

Tips for Success

  • Don't use tap water without dechlorinating it, chlorine kills Triops.
  • Airstones are not necessary but can help with oxygen in larger tanks.
  • Triops can tolerate a wide range of water qualities, that's part of their natural resilience.
  • If the water gets too cloudy, do a partial water change with dechlorinated water.
  • Males and females are hard to distinguish until maturity, look for the modified seventh leg pair in males.
